LOS ANGELES (August 8, 2018) – Las Fotos Project will host the opening reception for “Thank You, East Los” on Saturday, August 11th at 7:00 p.m., a debut photographic ode from local youth photographer Metztli Garcia, who poetically captures the culture, values and spirit of her community through her lens. As Garcia grows and moves on to pursue her undergraduate education at UCLA, we get to see what she takes with her when she talks about East Los Angeles.
Metztli Garcia, age 18, is a senior Las Fotos Project youth completing her third and final year as a student in the program. In this coming-of-age exhibition she offers an encompassing perspective on the community that has influenced her growth. From mariachi and lowriders to Danza performers and activists, “Thank You, East Los” features over 20 portraits, neighborhood photographs, and writings.
“Photography has given me the ability to share the place that taught me about community, family, pride, and La Raza. For me, it’s become a creative way to express my cultural heritage through art.”
