Our Photo Education PRogram

This process of self-exploration is designed to validate and empower our students’ perspective

Our photo education programming exploring self, community and career is developed under the framework of “Participatory Photography”, a creative modality that asks students to analyze their personal and social landscapes through the lens of photography. This process of self-exploration is designed to validate and empower our students’ perspective, while also providing an avenue for self-guided reflection, connection, and group dialogue.

Las Fotos Project’s core values of exploration, inclusivity & representation, social justice, equity and community are interwoven throughout our programs and public activities. Programming is developed under the framework of “Participatory Photography”, a creative modality that asks participants to analyze their personal and social landscapes through the lens of photography. This process of self-exploration is designed to validate and empower the participants’ perspective, while also providing an avenue for self-guided reflection, reconciliation, and group dialogue.

Our flagship course, Esta Soy Yo is a self-exploration program that incorporates therapeutic photography methodologies and project-based learning to support teenage with finding their voice while building self-confidence and self-efficacy through visual communication.

Each class explores a theme centralized on personal identity, home or interpersonal relationships. Students learn basic photography skills while also being mentored by professional photographers to carry out the student’s vision for their semester project.

Utilizing photojournalism as a tool for youth leadership, students learn to raise awareness about social issues in their community through visual storytelling, social media campaign and documentary photography. Our Digital Promotoras (or Digital Advocates) collaborate on solutions, share resources and develop digital strategies to address pressing issues through photography.

CEO teaches young photographers how to leverage their technical photography skills while empowering them to pursue opportunities within the digital media industry. Through weekly classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training, we equip our students with the tools, skills, and knowledge necessary to think critically, explore creative careers, and become self-sufficient.
