Self Portraits

Over the course of our 12-week fall semester, our teaching artists and mentors facilitated creative activities where the girls were able to familiarize themselves with the art of self-portraiture. The girls learned the difference between the spontaneity of the selfie vs. the more constructed art of the self-portrait, experimenting with positioning of the camera, composition, light, shadows, focus and posing with props.

77 girls from our Esta Soy Yo program created self-portraits by incorporating projections of their own images, exploring environmental portraits in personal spaces like their homes and bedrooms, and by learning about studio lighting to stage the perfect shot. They also worked in Photoshop to layer their final photos and create unique compositions, diptychs and triptychs.
