MaYA WOMXN IN LA
Maya Womxn in LA is a cross-generational exhibition that highlights the experiences of diasporic Guatemalan Maya womxn living in Los Angeles. Over the span of 12 weeks, 6 Guatemalan teen girls met to learn about the history of Guatemala, explore their personal identity, and make portraits of Maya girls and womxn, ranging in ages of 4-years-old to 96-years-old.
Subject matter presented challenges the idea that Maya womxn should remain passive objects in the background and on the margins. Students instead brought them to the center to show their complex and dynamic realities. Each piece serves as a testament to the enduring legacy and presence of Maya womxn.
