Wendy Cubillo - Chroma
About the Exhibition: Through the creative expressions of Los Angeles youth, Chroma sheds light on the often overlooked facets of coming of age. The project embraces intersectional identity and represents the journey of self-discovery through the lens of three distinct and compelling sections. Initiating the narrative, the first section reflects the concept of expectation and perfection. Cubillo showcases the slow transition of questioning societal definitions, prompting emotions like loneliness, confusion, and isolation.
Section two is the aftermath. It is the depiction of anger, frustration, and the chaotic reality of confronting heartbreak, loss, sexuality, and body image. The theme asserts the importance of trial and error and “stepping out of line” as it aids in developing our true identity. Chroma challenges conventional perceptions, proposing that chaos is not an antagonist, but rather a catalyst for personal growth.
In the final act, Chroma boldly marks a culmination of confidence and pride. It portrays resilience and strength, offering a moment to honor community artists, family, and the profound bonds cultivated in friendship. Chroma reflects the beautiful chaos that defines the journey into adulthood and it is a symbol of the identity created from diverse experiences woven together. We learn as we grow, and there is a sense of serenity in knowing that. This is coming of age.
