NELAL3NZ - Rep Ya Roots

About the Exhibition:
NELAL3NZ’s artistic journey echoes the powerful sentiments expressed by Gordon Parks, who viewed the camera as a weapon against societal injustices. Drawing inspiration from creative luminaries like Mister Cartoon, Estevan Oriol, and Veteranas and Rucas (Guadalupe Rosales), NELAL3NZ’s photography is a heartfelt tribute to their community.

Rep Ya Roots becomes a rallying cry in NELAL3NZ’s work, highlighting the authenticity of Brown LA Natives who were trendsetters before receiving that recognition. NELAL3NZ becomes a pioneer in crafting art that defies preexisting boxes, a testament to the resilience and creativity inherent in the community.

Amidst the urban landscape of LA, NELAl3NZ becomes a storyteller, creating an ongoing archive that celebrates the beauty and power of the community. In a city that fosters forward-thinking individuals with diverse backgrounds, NELAL3NZ’s work stands as a testament to the interconnectedness of everyone's stories, emphasizing the unity that binds the diverse tapestry of Los Angeles.

About the Artist:
NELAL3NZ (b. 2001, Los Angeles) is a Queer First-generation Photographer, born and raised in Northeast Los Angeles. Growing up in the historically Latino but rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of Glassell Park, NELAL3NZ utilizes photography and their personal knowledge to advocate for and preserve the evolving world around them.

Working across documentary photography, portraiture, fashion, and incorporating their family's photographs, NELAL3NZ crafts an ongoing archive of the city they call home. This artistic endeavor emphasizes the beauty and power inherent in their community, serving as both a celebration and preservation of its unique identity.

Beyond their personal projects, NELAL3NZ is deeply involved with Las Fotos Project, a Los Angeles-based photography non-profit dedicated to empowering teenage girls and gender non-conforming youth. As a Teaching Artist Assistant, NELAL3NZ plays a crucial role in guiding participants, supporting project development, and assisting teachers to ensure a seamless learning experience.

NELAL3NZ’s passion for photography stems from perseverance and an unwavering commitment to documenting moments within LA and among its native communities. Looking ahead 20 years, NELAL3NZ envisions a future where their loved ones and community can reflect on these captured moments, now preserved within the archival tapestry of Los Angeles.

  • La Estrella

Ely sitting in front of La Estrella, a once-beloved establishment renowned for its affordable and delicious offerings, notably the famed asada burritos and flavorful green salsas. Tragically, La Estrella has become another casualty of gentrification, its doors closed as the community witnesses the unsettling trend of small businesses being displaced from their spaces.

The closure of La Estrella not only signifies the loss of a culinary landmark but also serves as a poignant reminder of the broader challenges faced by communities undergoing gentrification. As affordable and cherished businesses are pushed out, the very fabric of the community is altered, leaving behind a void that extends beyond the realm of cuisine. The photograph captures not only Ely, but also the bittersweet memory of a place that once thrived, now silenced by the complex forces reshaping the landscape of our neighborhood.

Alma's childhood apartment becomes more than just a physical space; it is a repository of her personal history, a sanctuary for memories that resist the shifting tides of transformation.
In capturing Alma within this familiar setting, the photograph becomes a visual testimony to the emotional connection people have with the spaces that shape their identity. It reflects the complex interplay between memory, nostalgia, and the evolving dynamics of a neighborhood caught in the currents of gentrification.

  • TOTEMYGAT

In the sprawling expanse of Los Angeles skyscrapers, my lens focused on a potent symbol of resilience: my brother's truck. His truck stood as a tangible totem of the challenges we confronted and the strength borne from those struggles. The silhouette of the truck against the towering skyscrapers narrated a tale of triumph over adversity, each curve reflecting resilience forged in life's crucible. Amidst the relentless pace of urban life, the cityscape served as a fitting backdrop for a vehicle embodying a journey of personal growth, determination, and conquering obstacles.

As I captured my brother's creation, the metaphorical weight carried by the truck became apparent. It wasn't merely a vehicle; it represented the battles, uphill climbs, and strength built on our shared journey. The scars on its weathered exterior mirror our own struggles, marking time and victories against the odds. Despite the challenges depicted in the truck's worn exterior, it stands tall against the city skyline—defiant and unyielding, a symbol of resilience on a journey to not just surviving but thriving. Through my lens, I aimed to capture a story of endurance, strength, and unwavering spirit—a visual tribute to my brother's resilience in the towering heights of Los Angeles.

  • Gangsta Shit

In Elysian Park's tranquil oasis, NELAL3NZ's lens seized on an artful moment: a Lincoln lowrider poised beneath swaying palm trees. A mechanical masterpiece, the lowrider defies gravity, each wheel suspended, transforming the park into a stage. Hydraulics danced, casting shadows that synchronized with palm leaves' rustle. Under iconic California palms, the lowrider harmonized with nature, blending urban car culture and tranquility. The Lincoln's sleek lines against palm curves creates a visual symphony, a fusion of automotive art with its verdant surroundings. Elysian Park is the canvas for this mobile ballet, a dance requiring finesse of the lowrider with seamless integration with the environment.

  • Cyco-Lic-No

In the heart of Highland Park, NELAL3NZ's lens landed on a captivating scene — two lowriders adorned with intricate candy paint and meticulous details, transforming the asphalt into a stage of automotive artistry. The radiant sheen of the candy paint draped the vehicles in a spectrum of colors that defied norms, each layer coming alive under the sunlight. Chrome accents, custom designs, and personalized touches showcased the owners' passion, turning these lowriders into rolling masterpieces.

Navigating Highland Park's streets, the lowriders are more than mere vehicles, becoming cultural ambassadors of the community's rich heritage and commitment to self-expression. The vibrant neighborhoods serve as an authentic backdrop, emphasizing the lowriders' presence.

NELAL3NZ aimed not just to capture paint and details but to also convey Highland Park's automotive culture—a convergence of creativity, tradition, and individuality on four wheels. • Nuestra Historia

In the heart of my family's pueblo, I embarked on a transcendant walk armed with the strength of spirit. Each step became a prayer, echoing a spiritual battle fought with unwavering faith. The steadfast colors of buildings comprised a community grounded in heritage. The walk, with its blend of street food and incense, was a sensory and divine tapestry. Embracing each moment, the walk was a pilgrimage to my past from my present.

  • El Cambio

In the vibrant streets of my family pueblo, my lens captured a profound tableau—a horse procession framed by the community, against a towering billboard proclaiming, "El cambio lo construimos juntos" — "We build change together." Adorned in resplendent colors, the horses symbolized community, strength and unity, echoing the billboard's sentiment.

The billboard anchored the spirit of the moment, transforming words into a call for collaborative change. Faces aglow with admiration formed a contrast, depicting the symbiotic relationship between tradition and progress. I aimed to convey not just the procession's beauty but the profound message of unity and collective agency. It became a canvas where tradition, community, and aspirations for a better future converged, encapsulating the essence of a community building change together, one rhythmic hoofbeat at a time.

In this haven, you discover the true meaning of abundance; where material wealth may be scarce, the richness of family and love makes you feel like you have everything. Tia Esther's home transcends its physical space; it becomes a cherished atmosphere where the bonds of family create a wealth beyond measure.
