Open to: All

Deadline: Tuesday, May 12

Time: 11:59 PM PST

KUOW’s RadioActive Youth Media has made the difficult choice to cancel our in-person Intro to Radio Journalism Workshop and instead host a three-week online radio storytelling workshop from July 27 to August 12. We have made this change out of concern for the safety and wellbeing of our staff and community, and the ongoing uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • You are 15-18 years old and live in the greater Seattle metropolitan area.
  • You’re excited to use media to tell true stories. You’re engaged in the world. You’re curious and always asking questions. You love writing and want to try telling stories through sound.
  • You want to share all sides of the story as a journalist — this workshop is NOT a platform to promote a cause, organization, or point of view
  • You’re ready to try new things: No broadcasting or journalism experience required!

  • The 2020 summer workshop will take place online.
  • The workshop will run for three weeks, from Monday, July 27th through Wednesday, August 12th.
  • Online workshop meetings will take place three days a week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., with a break for lunch and individual work time in-between. You may need to put in additional time outside of workshop hours to complete assignments.
  • Each participant will make a short audio “profile” of an interesting person in your home or community. The stories will be posted on and will be included in the RadioActive podcast.
  • Each participant can check out a KUOW laptop and a smartphone with internet hot-spot if needed.
  • For successfully completing the three-week workshop, you’ll earn $400!

  • Attend all workshop meetings.
  • Complete work on time (you may need to put in extra work outside of workshop hours).
  • Work on your own and in small groups.
  • Have fun, be creative, take risks!

  • Improve your communications skills: writing, listening, and talking to people. Build your confidence and leadership skills.
  • Work with professional journalists. Develop time management skills and meet deadlines in a professional setting. Learn how to give and receive feedback in a collaborative and creative environment.
  • Be part of a supportive, collaborative, fun group of teens. Gain mentors to support your career and education path.
  • By finishing this workshop, you earn the opportunity to keep making radio at KUOW as an advanced producer.
