What is Las Fotos Project? Hear from past students and mentors!

Las Fotos Project’s mission is to elevate the voices of teenage girls from communities of color through photography and mentoring, empowering them to channel their creativity for the benefit of themselves, their community, and future careers.

About Us

Las Fotos Project’s staunch belief in art's power to transform not only the individual, but also society as a whole forms the foundation of our work.

A self-exploration program that practices therapeutic photography to support students with finding their voice while building self-confidence and self-efficacy.

Utilizing photojournalism as a tool for youth leadership, students learn to raise awareness about social issues and health disparities in their community through storytelling and social media.

Creative Entrepreneurship Opportunities is our social enterprise and apprenticeship program which provides teen girls with valuable entrepreneurial skills for future careers in the creative industry.

Digital Promotoras: Vibrance

Finding a community’s vibrancy anywhere, in anything or with anyone, means having the ability to fully experience the world with energy and passion. Twelve Las Fotos Project students explored this concept of their communities being full of life in the Digital Promotoras: Vibrance class through environmental portraiture, photojournalism, and visual narratives. Their photos explore subjects and issues to communicate important messages, promote awareness, or simply to share moments of beauty in their environment.

Digital Promotoras: Action

The Las Fotos Project students of the Digital Promotoras: Action class employed a variety of storytelling techniques to spark change and calls to action. Through photojournalism and editorial layouts, students provided their point of view and took a stance on issues that matter to them. These Digital Promotoras are young students, artists, activists, and advocates for the causes they care about. Their individual works are not only visually captivating, but they also serve a greater purpose to provide a sense of urgency.

Creative Entrepreneurship Opportunities Student Portfolios

About our CEOs: The students of the CEO program at Las Fotos Project are true entrepreneurs who galvanize change. In an effort to combat the current male-dominated photo industry and support BIPOC owned businesses during the COVID-19 Pandemic, these students are recognized as professionals during photo assignments while continuing to receive on-the-job training and mentorship from their supervisors to further strengthen their talents.

Esta Soy Yo, Perspectives

The Esta Soy Yo: Perspectives class encouraged Las Fotos Project students to use photography as a tool to explore their identities, share their unique perspectives, and reflect on their environments. As they experimented with techniques or played with colors to enhance their digital photos, the students learned non-traditional approaches to using this medium as both a therapeutic and creative outlet.

Esta Soy Yo, Layers

The Esta Soy Yo: Layers class is where student photographers are further identified as artists. They used photographic art-making to explore concepts of creativity, identity, and self-discovery. Both symbols and language are embedded throughout the students’ photographs to intentionally explore their heritage, highlight their daily interactions, and uplift those around them.

COVID-19 Update & Student Supports

The health of our students, staff and mentors – as well as their families – are extremely important to us. We’re following the recommendations made the CDC, state and city leadership – our in-person programming has been suspended for the time being. All of our programs are currently virtual and staff are working remotely. We have created a community resource page to access meals, internet services and other support services (click the button below to access it). We thank all of those who have reached out to check on the well-being of our students and have offered support.
